Activism

If you've heard of Sinclair Broadcast Group, it is probably because you're REALLY into television, or you remember the story a few weeks ago about them airing an anti-Kerry documentary and disguising it as news. Well, that's just the tip of the iceberg. With a conservative news flourish that would make Rupert Murdoch proud, SBG routinely airs a segment called "The Point," a commentary so skewed it makes Sean Hannity look positively left wing. We encourage you to visit Sinclair Action, a joint effort of Media Matters, MoveOn, Campaign for America's Future, and others. This site gives you an overview of SBG, and links to contact SBG and their advertisers. We strongly encourage you to let them know that we won't stand for this!

News

We Tried Asking Nicely. Democratic Senators, led by Minority Leader Harry Reid, will launch an investigative panel to examine the problems of the Bush administration, such as contract abuse, global warming, and No Child Left Behind. It's refreshing to see the Democrats step up to the plate like this.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed in DC District Court on Monday to sue the Federal Election Commission (FEC) because of their abused discretion. Seems that the Americans for Tax Reform President, Grover Norquist, gave Ken Mehlman (Bush's campaign manager) a list of conservative activists (including names and contact information) in February of this year. When contacted by CREW about this gross violation of campaign finance laws, the FEC replied, stating that the Commission agreed that all parties had, in fact, violated campaign finance laws, but stating that the Commission had determined to dismiss the mater without taking further action. We wish CREW the best of luck in making the FEC realize that no one should be above the law.

We don't wish to alarm you, but only six states are prepared for a bioterror attack. With recent comments by Tommy Thompson about the vulnerability of our food supply, and funding for bioterror countermeasures falling, this is a serious concern. It's been over three years since 9/11, but it doesn't really seem like we've learned much.

Editorials

The PTC crusade is on! Todd Shields gives us a comprehensive look at the problem with the PTC, particularly in regards to their FCC complaints. Tim Goodman writes a fantastic piece about the PTC, and why it's so absurd for us to accept that we are being treated like six year olds. He also provides a link to write to FCC Chairman Mike Powell. Special thanks to Gretchen Eisenach for both links!

But Daddy, I Don't Wanna Lose the New Deal! Wheat. State's rights. Marijuana. Roscoe Filburn. 1937. Adam Cohen explains how all of these topics are relevant to you, and why a conservative Supreme Court could throw Congress into chaos.

Why President Bush is Right About Everything. Oh, come on. Did YOU think about having a party for 35 of your closest business associates, paid for by the government, ostensibly to discuss "the economy?" Dan Froomkin has assembled a mighty big editorial on this "first pseudo-event of the second term," as well as a cabinet watch. It's his last column until January 10th, so get it while it's hot!
